Path of Exile Item Upgrades
The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading them. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.
In most cases, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade gear because of their high requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to weapon and armor items. They boost the stats of whatever item they are attached to. The amount of damage that an armored item or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the extent of its upgrades. The absorption of damage by an item of armor will increase when it's upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be more heavy.
There are a variety of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each has a different impact. For instance, certain upgrades will grant the armor a certain amount of additional health points, while others will make it stronger and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item can get is indicated by the name of the upgrade, as illustrated in the table below.
Some upgrades also feature magical or a combination of technology and magic which is identified by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out with a identical jewel without destroying the original one. You can only replace the jewel once within an item of equipment.

The first trinket a player is able to unlock is the cloak, which gives a small but useful bonus to movement speed and the ability to escape. The player can then acquire necklaces, amulets, and rings in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.
These trinkets can also grant buffs and skills that remain active when the hero is not fighting. This enables the hero to be more effective when not active and may also help fill in the void of a strong team or any talent tree slots that would normally be filled with the hero's best stats.
In general, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items that you will not replace in the near future.
