World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading
The upgrade option allows players to boost an item's gear rating up 700 points, and then give it a bonus. Items can be upgraded if they are in your inventory and you take them to the kiln.
Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like an ideally rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) while others like weapons don't change much post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Upgrades to weapons can improve their numerical stats, including attack damage, crit chance, and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons also come with an unchanging bonus that increases their damage per second. Many weapons also have a fixed bonus which is activated when three or more identical weapons are placed in a unit. This bonus may exceed the damage a weapon upgrade alone can do.
The cost of upgrading a weapon's capabilities is contingent on the quality of the weapon and its current level. For instance, an upgrade to a +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade a weapon will increase until it needs a higher level of Smithing Stones. At that point it will reset to one.
Upgraded weapons can also alter their base stats. This is usually a positive factor, but it could also have negative effects. Upgrades can make things impossible to use, unless you are exceptionally lucky.
Items of armor can also be upgraded to increase their effectiveness. In the case of chests or helms, it will boost its base defense while gloves and belts increase their strength and dexterity. Armor has a rerolling option for its Enhanced Defense percent. This means that it may reduce its value.
The upgrade template for a weapon will display the new stats that it will gain upon upgrading and their respective values.
